Runway model

Story told by Carolyn Deer

I ran fashion shows, four fashion shows. With the Moose, we did a lot. They made the stages, my brother Georgie did the emceeing, and there was a lot of show practice too.

All our kids, whoever was working and helping out at all these events, naturally we got all of them involved too.

This was all free – all these people, these hairdressers, everything! We had all the clothing supplied for us, and we even got all of that for free. I had La Tisseur, a very exclusive store – they dressed all the men and women. I had Zellers, and I had Woolworths in Lachine at one time; so many came to help us.

We had barbers, hairdressers, and stylists who did up all the men and the women.

This one man who's passed now, Danny Norton, looked so amazing; all of a sudden, he was this runway model, and he felt it! The crowd was yelling and screaming for him. He thanked me. He thanked me after that, with tears in his eyes, and he said, “I never, in my whole life, ever felt so, so good.”

I have two or three recordings of the shows.
